In fact, most ‘compound henna’ hair dye are usually a dangerous compound of inferior quality henna, that contains lower dye content and is mixed with harmful additives and synthetic dyes that can cause severe allergic reaction. The package may contain PPD (para-phenylenediamine), ammonia or peroxide. However, even if it doesn’t, this type of hair dye may other hazardous chemicals, such as harsh metallic salts, alcohol and synthetic dyes. Sadly, the low-quality henna is mixed with synthetic dyes and ‘who knows what else’. This scary mixture is commonly referred to as, 'Compound Henna' hair dye.

The product is normally packaged with an image of a beautiful woman with long, radiant hair on the cover. The average consumer is tempted to buy this product based on the image. Should we?

Maybe we decide to look beyond the image and try and find the ingredient label. We might be surprised that this so-called 'all-natural' henna hair dye doesn't appear to have an ingredient label! Who really knows what is mixed in with this inferior henna??  Don’t buy it.

Perhaps, you’re now wondering, “How can such products sold without an ingredient label?” It does seem mysterious. However, the answer is that in the countries where the henna is grown, they might not be required to list the ingredients on the label. Once exported, the U.S. importer is not required to re-label the product.

Additionally, the FDA* states, “Because the FPLA does not apply to cosmetic samples and products used exclusively by professionals--for example, for application at a salon, or a booth at a fair or boardwalk--the requirement for an ingredient declaration does not apply to these products.”

That is why purchasing 'mysterious' henna mixed with unknown additives and synthetic dyes can be a costly and potentially dangerous experience**, even when bought at a “professional” beauty supply store.

Actually, there are two very safe options when considering what kind of henna hair dye to buy that will protect your precious mane –especially if you want to cover previously chemically-dyed hair:

Body Art Quality Henna (BAQ Henna) is normally used for tattoo body art, however the higher dye content actually makes it a stronger application than other types of henna for hair dye. Therefore, Saba Botanical of USA provides pure, body art quality henna (Lawsonia Inermis) for those who prefer to use body art quality henna for their hair care –even though it’s a much longer application process.

This 100% natural, pure henna (BAQ henna) is grown in Rajasthan, India. Rajasthani henna is widely acclaimed as the source of the world’s best henna, being farmed and produced for generations. When the henna leaves are processed, the henna is tediously examined and finely sifted to maintain high quality. It’s then packaged in air-tight plastic bags and again sealed in foil packaging to protect and ensure freshness; also to protect from light and moisture.

No worries! You can use 100% pure body art henna (BAQ henna) over a commercial hair dye or chemical residue in hair. There are no added chemical dyes or metallic salts in our body art quality henna. It is 100% pure and contains no other ingredient. So you should have no worries about dangerous allergic reaction from a chemical dye. No worries about ingredients that will risk your health.

My name is Gail and I live in Los Angeles CA. I am an interior designer and have to look my best at all times. Several months ago, I developed an allergy to all salon products. They started to burn my scalp , even the so-called henna products I tried all had some kind of chemical ingredients. My husband found out about Saba on the Internet and I sent away for your product. Since I started using Saba, there has been no more burning, and the color is rich and naturally beautiful. It is a great and safe product , and I highly recommend it.

The Henna plant or Hina (Lawsonia Inermis) is known by a variety of names: Al-Khanna, Al-henna, Jamaica Mignonette, Mehndi, and Mendee. The lawsone, primarily concentrated in the petioles of the leaves, cause staining or dying. However, they must be crushed in order for the lawsone molecules contained within the leaf o the henna plant, to release (when mixed with a mildly acidic liquid, such as found in lemon juice, strong tea, etc.).  Once released, the lawsone gradually bind to the outer layer of the proteins in the skin or hair, thus staining or dying it a bright orange-red hue. Henna must be combined with other natural botanicals, like indigo or coffee beans to achieve darker hues.

Fortunately, we don’t have to search for and crush henna ourselves. It is commonly traded as a dried powder from milling and sifting the henna leaf. As a powder, it’s also known as mendhi and is not only used for natural hair dye but hair conditioning as well.  Traditionally, the henna mix must be soaked for 6 to 12 hours and rest on the hair for 3 to 4 hours or the lawsone in the henna won’t work.

I just want to drop you a line to let you know that I have received only excellent and positive feedback from customers concerning the use of the Lustrous Herbal/Henna powders for their hair.  As we discussed, I obtained very good results when I tested the various colors.  However, the true test is customer satisfaction level.  I am pleased to say that my customers are extremely satisfied with the coloring capacity of the herbal/henna powders and the conditioning they obtain as well.

I am always looking for a better product to offer to my customers.  So when testing samples of Lustrous Herbal/Henna Powder provided results superior to those obtained with my previous brand of herbal/henna powder, we have switched the brand we offer our customers from our former brand to Lustrous.

Organic Henna Powder

Thank you for providing such a reliable and excellent product that will allow men and women to color and condition their hair safely and naturally.  While all of the Lustrous colors provide great color coverage, it is the browns and blacks that tend to absolutely outperform the competition in terms of providing true browns and realistic blacks.  This is welcome news to people with dark hair who have wanted to use henna products but kept getting red results rather than true browns and black.  These are a keeper.
